The German Bundesliga, sometimes known as the Fußball-Bundesliga, is a professional football league, at the top of the football league system in Germany. The league consists of 18 teams and operates under a promotion and relegation system. This league's champion qualifies for the DFL Supercup. Since the tournament was established. Bayern Munich is the top championship team with 31 titles. However, other champions are no less prominent. Examples include Borussia Dortmund, Hamburger SV, Werder Bremen, Borussia Mönchengladbach and VfB Stuttgart.

Why Does Bundesliga Have 18 Teams?

The Bundesliga is the top league of German football. It started in 1963/64 with only 16 teams. But in 1965/66, something strange happened and the number of teams went up to 18.

One of the teams, Hertha Berlin, was caught cheating and had to go down. But the people in charge wanted to have another team from Berlin in the league. So they picked Tasmania Berlin, a very weak team that played in the west part of the city. They were very bad and lost almost every game. They only stayed for one season and then disappeared.

But this was not fair to the other teams that were supposed to go down too. They were Karlsruher and Schalke, and they had played better than Tasmania Berlin. So the people in charge decided to let them stay in the league as well. That’s how the number of teams became 18.

Since then, the number has stayed the same, except for one time in 1991/92. That was when Germany became one country again and some teams from East Germany joined the league. There were 20 teams that season, but it went back to 18 the next season.

Why Does Bundesliga Have a Winter Break?

The Bundesliga is the German football league. It has 34 games in a season, which is less than other big leagues in Europe. This means that the Bundesliga can have a winter break in the middle of the season.

The winter break is good for the players because they can rest and relax. They can also spend some time with their families and friends and avoid playing in very cold weather.

The winter break used to be very long, about six weeks, and there was no football in January. But now it is shorter, only about three weeks, starting from 2020/21.

Calendar for the 2023/24 season

The winter break will start after the games on 19-20 December 2023 for the Bundesliga and 15-17 December 2023 for Bundesliga 2, which is the second division. The Bundesliga will have some games on weekdays before the break, on 16 December 2023. The Bundesliga will come back on 12 January 2024, and Bundesliga 2 will follow on 19 January 2024.

The last games of the season will be on 18 May 2024 for the Bundesliga and 19 May 2024 for Bundesliga 2. That’s when we will know who are the champions and who are going up or down.
